Stock Concentration Concentration = Research Material Mass ÷ Experimental Solution Volume

When mass is entered in milligrams and solution volume is entered in milliliters, the resulting concentration is expressed in mg/mL.

Analytical Aliquot Volume Aliquot Volume = Target Analyte Mass ÷ Stock Concentration

The target analyte mass is converted to milligrams when necessary, and the resulting aliquot volume is reported in both mL and µL.

Example Laboratory Concentration Calculation

Consider an experimental preparation containing 5 mg of research material in a total solution volume of 2 mL.

  • Stock concentration = 5 mg ÷ 2 mL = 2.5 mg/mL
  • A target analyte mass of 250 mcg equals 0.25 mg
  • Analytical aliquot volume = 0.25 mg ÷ 2.5 mg/mL = 0.10 mL
  • 0.10 mL is equivalent to 100 µL
